What do geeks have to do with beer, you may ask? Well, since the birth of the steam engine in the 18th century, geeks have commanded the scene through the improvements of technology.

Brewing the perfect pint is a process that has been evolving over the past 6,000 years. It’s a science of regulating temperature, timing and ingredients. Cape Ann Brewing of Gloucester, MA gave G2 a sneak peek at the technology behind their brewing facilities. Their brewery contains 8 stainless steel tanks, producing over 450,000 barrels a year. Cape Ann Brewery produces a variety of different brews and ales, like one of our favorites, their Imperial Pumpkin Stout; which we also learned takes 60 pounds of pumpkin to make.

You can learn more about Cape Ann Brewing at G2s NOCtoberfest celebration Wednesday, October 26th, when they will be sampling 4 of their beers. So join us in celebrating the geeks that have contributed to the advancement of beer production and enjoy slurping down a golden delicious brewski at G2s NOC.

Last Wednesday, the G2 Team rolled up as usual to get everything set up, for this month’s BASG (Boston Area Sustainability Group). For those of you who aren't familiar, BASG is G2’s way to help promote sustainable business choices in the community. We get a speaker to come and share sustainable business practices; and it's free; there's networking; and it's at the House of Blues.

Anywho, this BASG we got to hear from Susan Hunt Stevens. Stevens is the Founder/CEO of Practically Green, an online service that motivates people to make healthy green changes in their lives using the power of social networks and gaming techniques to drive real-life behavior change.

Steven business model brings up a great point. Social media has created a massive platform for peer pressure. Stevens talked about sharing individual habits via social media and how internet has expanded the reach of our communication and the impact of our choices. Where "liking" others habits on facebook is really building communities and updating your status is creating social norms. So the kicker here is, if everyone is tweeting about their sustainable habits, aren't you going to feel guilty that when you realize you’re the only one who's not integrating sustainable lifestyle choices? Or the only one on facebook that doesn’t like Bostons new Green Labs? Or when you’re the only one not tagged in the photos from the last Green Drinks?

Just saying, thanks to technology, peer pressure is changing one guilty non-recycler at a time.

A misty March morning was the beginning of the G2 transformation. It’s been a 2 year haul with growth spurts along the way, and we’ve finally reached maximum capacity. Out growing our old space and with a vast city of office options, the G2 Team had quite the decision to make, “should [we] stay or should [we] go now?” (the Clash, anyone?)

[caption id="attachment_128" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Fort Point Channel, G2 Technology Group Headquarters"][/caption]

Over the past two years, the Fort Point Channel has truly become a part of our identity, the entrepreneurial spirit, the community of passionate companies that share the same commitment to excellence, like Drink, and Flour. Organizations like Mass Challenge who are practically across the street are supporting early-stage entrepreneurs, providing them with shared office space, educational opportunities and other resources they need to launch high-growth, high-impact businesses immediately. We’re still not quite sure how/when this community really began to take off. Perhaps it began with Mayor Menino deeming of this neighborhood as the Innovation District or if organizations like the Friends of the Fort Point Channel who have been fostering this community or maybe it started with the artists back in the 1970s. We don’t know, when the shift really occurred but the energy out here has really been mounting at exponential levels.

Could there be a more exciting place for an up and coming company? We think not. Not only do we have our own music venue (Bank of America Pavillion) and the best local bar in town (Lucky’s), but we also have a brewery (Harpoon). Heck there was even an article in the Globe naming the hood “Geekville”… umm hello? Could this place be more G2? So when we realized that the move was necessary, we opted to move to the next block.

That misty morning in late March, the G2 Team assembled and set out to make the great move, hauling all our computers, desks and razor scooters to our new location a whole block away. After two years of stomping around the Fort Point Channel, we weren’t about to bail.

On April 4th, 2011, G2 Technology Group Inc. held its first successful dog Skyping session. G2 president Glenn Grant and senior network consultant, Lubbi Ernjakovic demonstrated the new amenity from their iPhones.

Client Fenway Bark Stay.Play.Heal started off as a typical outsourced IT case, data collection, remote help, network support, the usual expertise for G2. Upon meeting, Fenway Bark owner, Jane Fulton shared her vision; to provide the finest quality pet destination in the country, where care and amenities are transparent, measurable and accessible to the families and their pets, and the idea sparks began.

G2 suggested high-definition webcams that would stream public views of the main play area from the Fenway Bark website, and offer private Skype accounts for Fenway Barks Luxury Boxes. Other pet boarding facilities are using

outdated security style webcams offering dim and unidentifiable footage. G2’s suggestions allow pet parents to access from mobile media 24/7. Potentially, users can check up on their pups on the train, on vacation or in the middle of a board meeting, whenever and wherever! Youtube and facebook beware; competition is a brewing for the number one office distraction.

“We are in the business of saying yes!” comments G2’s president, Glenn Grant. “We welcome creative visionaries and love the opportunity to make technological dreams reality for new businesses.”

With magic of collaboration, G2 is proud to help Fenway Bark be the first and only overnight pet hotel to offer Skype its furry clients. Fenway Bark is scheduled to open spring of 2011 at 88 Black Falcon Avenue #188, Boston MA 02210.

Please join us at the next BASG Event at our usual venue, the House of Blues in Boston, right behind the Green Monster in Boston's Fenway. Our guest speaker this time is Jim Nail from Speaking Sustainability. Jim will tackle the topic of Green Marketing and how to avoid the dreaded "Greenwashing" and bring a genuine nature to your messaging.

"Green marketing" now faces restrictive new guidelines from the Federal Trade Commission and high levels of skepticism from consumers. Corporate social responsibility often appeals only to narrow stakeholder groups. But "sustainability" is becoming a core strategy to address business risks from climate change, competition for raw materials, and growing consumer concern. Jim will describe his research in "sustainability communications", highlighting how companies must organize, plan, and execute these communications initiatives differently than traditional marketing and PR campaigns.

A bit about Jim: Jim Nail is a 30-year marketing veteran who specializes in creating compelling, non-technical messages about innovative products and strategies to customers, investors, and other key stakeholders. Jim's new venture, Speaking Sustainability, takes the lessons he learned as a pioneer in making the Internet and social media essential marketing tools and applies them to cleantech and to the communication of sustainable business strategies. His clients include Massachusetts Interfaith Power & Light and London-based sustainability analyst firm Verdantix. In addition to 15 years at leading advertising agencies in New York and Boston, Jim has led marketing for CMGI-funded online advertising start-up AdSmart and social media analysis firm TNS Cymfony. For 8 years, Jim was Forrester's lead analyst on the integration of digital marketing into mainstream marketing plans.

Our guest speaker is Amy Scarlino, President of Catchpole Corporation, an executive visibility and speaker placement firm. In this tough economy many people are finding that getting that dream job is more difficult than ever. In addition to experience, education and networking, one thing you should not overlook is building your own personal brand. Amy will go over some steps you can take to begin the process of becoming known as the "go-to" person in whatever field you are pursuing.

As always, since the Foundation Room only holds about 25 people, RSVPs are recommended, which you can do via the basg.org website. Event Registration

G2 is sponsoring a new Boston Area Sustainability Group event at the House of Blues Boston on September 28th, 2010.
Coming back from the summer, we're kicking off the BASG series with John Katovich who has a very interesting and varied background in capital markets, law and stock exchanges. John will talk about how sustainability can and does weave into capital markets and what that means for companies trying to secure funds today or operate more sustainably.

As usual, it will be at the great setting of the House of Blues Foundation Room, so we can share our thoughts and network in a cool, comfortable setting.

As always, since the Foundation Room only holds about 25 people, RSVPs are recommended, which you can do via the basg.org website. Event Registration

I came across this article and thought it was important to relay. None of our customers have encountered this due to our email filtering services but it seems like old tactics are once again new with this worm and it's evolution. Beware of any emails with the subject line, "Here you have it" or "Just for you". This article is great, describing what to be aware of and what to do to mitigate the threat. http://www.informationweek.com/news/security/attacks/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=227400150
